Vancouver Canada (PRWEB) February 16, 2012

Age takes its toll on men’s sperm starting at about age 30, and semen quantity and sperm quality decline sharply after age 45 according to a recent study presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s annual conference. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2051041/MALE-biological-clock-After-41-chance-father-declines-rapidly.html#ixzz1mQLWzUkH)

This can affect pregnancy outcomes for couples undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). Advanced paternal age is also associated with a higher risk of spontaneous abortion and genetic disorders like downs syndrome, autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. Natural supplements and Traditional Chinese medicine appears to repair the quality of aging sperm.

Acubalance Wellness Centre, a Fertility Acupuncture clinic, is offering a free seminar on Fertility and Age: Can You Turn Back the Reproductive Clock? March 12 at Pekoe Tea Lounge in Vancouver. Lorne Brown, a Dr of TCM and clinical director at Acubalance, will be talking about the effects of age on men’s and women’s fertility, and what you can do about it.

“Much of what we do is try to slow down the reproductive clock, repair environmental insults to the reproductive system, and extend that window of fertility for both men and women. Chinese herbal therapy and regular acupuncture has been shown to boost sperm quality. There are now some exciting studies showing that CO Q10 may be effective in improving semen parameters.” says Brown.

A study published in the Journal of Urology found that Coenzyme Q10 supplementation resulted in a statistically significant improvement in certain semen parameters. The study stated that further studies were needed to determine to what extent those improved parameters results in increased pregnancy rates.

Another study has just shown that vitamin D levels may be a potent factor in fertility for men and women. Vitamin D is essential for the healthy development of each sperm’s nucleus. It also increases levels of the male sex hormone testosterone, improving a man’s libido, according to the review of several studies, published this week in the European Journal of Endocrinology.

“Vitamin D3 is one of the supplements I prescribe to boost male fertility in all my male patients –particularly those over 40,” says Brown.

Dr Brown’s Five Fab Nutrients are:

     Co Q10
Omega 3 fatty acid with added Vit D3
Zinc – pumpkin seeds
Selenium – brazil nuts
Whole food antioxidants

“This combined with an anti-oxidant whole foods diet, weight management and regular acupuncture can help older men optimize sperm production and quality.” says Brown.

APMA President Michael King, DPM

Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) February 16, 2012

Today’s podiatrists are vital to maintaining a healthy workforce, and saving billions in health-care expenditures. That’s the message APMA President Michael J. King, DPM, will share with hundreds of labor and management industry leaders this Saturday, February 18, as he speaks at the 35th Annual National Labor & Management Conference (NLMC) in Hollywood, FL.

Dr. King will join an elite panel of health-care leaders to discuss “The Current State and Future of American Health Care.” Those speaking alongside Dr. King include Peter W. Carmel, MD, president of the American Medical Association; Tommy Thompson, former Secretary of Health and Human Services; and Ken Raske, president of the Greater New York Hospital Association.

“Untreated ailments, especially those related to the feet, are leading to chronic problems in America’s workforce. We must come together to find real solutions for these problems,” said Dr. King. “Including podiatrists in all health-care plans can help to cut health-care costs while increasing value. By investing a small amount in prevention, we can provide quality care and proper footwear, maintain a healthy workforce, and save billions in health-care expenditures.”

Podiatrists are critical to collaborative care, especially when treating complications from diabetes. A study by Thomson Reuters found that among patients with commercial insurance with foot ulcers who saw a podiatrist, there was a 20 percent lower risk of amputation and a 26 percent lower risk of hospitalization compared with patients who did not see a podiatrist. If every American at risk for developing a diabetic foot ulcer visited a podiatrist once before complications set in, the US health-care system could save $ 3.5 billion in one year.

According to the CDC, a systematic review of 56 published studies of worksite health programs showed that well-implemented workplace health programs can lead to a 25 percent savings on health-care costs, as well as workers’ compensation and disability management claims costs.

The NLMC has been recognized as one of the top labor and management programs in the US. Participants in the conference include union leadership, senior corporate management, and trustees and directors of multi-employer health, welfare, and pension funds.
The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) is the nation’s leading professional organization for today’s podiatrists. Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs) are qualified by their education, training, and experience to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and structures of the leg. APMA has 53 state component locations across the United States and its territories, with a membership of more than 12,000 podiatrists. All practicing APMA members are licensed by the state in which they practice podiatric medicine. For more information, visit APMA.org.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) February 14, 2012

The Bakery’s owners have survived the Holocaust, cancer, Hurricane Ike and most recently a recession to emerge transformed with the opening of a new modern bakery and coffee house in the Memorial City area. “During tough times people enjoy the small pleasures of life,” said Bobby Jucker, hence the ability to open during a recession.

Due to Hurricane Ike the Jucker Family had to rebuild its iconic location on Braeswood, which enabled the family to make a then 60-year-old business new again. With a renewed commitment to freshness, quality and great service the Bakery began seeing an uptick in visits and as well as a demand to see the Bakery outside of its one location and online store.

Why open on Kingsride near Memorial City Mall? “The growth and reinvention of the Memorial City area seemed like a natural fit for us,” said Jucker. The nearby Memorial Hermann Hospital plus the wonderful residential area near The Shops at Memorial City promotes a community that is perfectly suited for a bakery/coffee house. Free WIFI will be available and focuses on café service, coffees, takes out, breads, pastries, celebratory cakes, cupcakes and more.

“We are hoping this new concept bakery café will be the first of several expansions,” said Jucker. A veteran restaurateur – Chuck Krauthamer, manages the new cafe. Previously Krauthamer was Opening Director of Dave and Busters and Sabine River Café.

The new bakery cafe was designed by David Kohn who also designed the Braeswood Location after Hurricane Ike. One of the special elements is the inclusion of three spires paying homage to the Three Brothers, the spires and the history of the Braeswood location.

About Three Brothers Bakery

Three Brothers Bakery has a long and fascinating history, with its origins in Chrzanow, Poland dating back to 1825. Later, World War II changed the business and lives of the Juckers forever, when members of the family were imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps.

The original Three Brothers Bakery at 4036 S. Braeswood Blvd and owned by Bobby, Janice and Estelle Jucker, continues to operate a full-service, scratch bakery making savory Eastern European style breads and pastries, cookies, a full line of specialty dessert cakes and pies, as well as custom birthday, special occasion, wedding and grooms’ cakes with many products dairy-free – perfect for those who are lactose intolerant.

The Three Brothers Bakery pecan pie was named “…the best mail order pecan pie America has to offer…” by Country Living magazine and most recently Bobby Jucker competed in Food Network Challenge, seen on Food Network’s Outrageous Food – highlighting their Pumpecapple Piecake, named Pastry Chef of the Year at The Houston Culinary Awards and awarded in January The Knot Best of Weddings 2012 Pick for the 3rd year in a row. Three Brothers Bakery is a certified Woman Owned Business through WBENC and a State of Texas HUB.

(PRWEB) February 07, 2012

With so many e-tutoring providers currently available, parents may feel that this is the future of private tuition. Tutors International (http://www.tutors-international.com), a leading private tutoring organisation based in Oxford, today announced that online tuition is rarely the best form of education. While they have provided private tuition remotely when asked, founder Adam Caller stated, “We try not to get involved in online tuition, preferring to tutor students face-to-face. It’s an important part of teaching to recognise when your pupil actually understands what they’re being taught.”

There are different methods of online tuition. For example, multiple-choice question papers with a point-deducting ‘hint’ system, or video-call style tutoring. But Caller states that both these methods have serious pitfalls:

“We once got involved with preparing an e-learning program for primary school maths, and ran into problems when you try to supply a hint for the sum 1+1. How do you teach a child how to solve that without sitting next to them? Skype-style video conferencing calls might appear to be just as good as sitting next to someone in the room, but you’re not factoring in experiential learning, scribbling things down on paper, grabbing a nearby object and getting the student to manipulate it to truly grasp the concept. They still do not permit the kind of non-verbal communication essential for a teacher to know that the student really understands something.”

The online tuition industry may offer a convenient and low-cost alternative to face-to-face full-time private tutoring, but there are few guarantees around the standard of tuition the pupil will receive. Low hourly rates arise from a saturated market, where anybody, without formal qualifications, can offer their time as a personal online tutor for a very low salary.

“Many tutors are being recruited from countries like India, where they command very low rates of pay and may not be familiar with the school curriculum. There are, of course, some great tutors out there, but the point is that as a parent, you don’t really know what you’re getting. Virtual learning can make it easy for a child to look up the answer, rather than work it out themselves, while Skype-type video calls can be hard to supervise.”

About Tutors International

Tutors International is a worldwide organization providing experienced private tutors to work with children of all ages and nationalities. Tutors are available for full-time tutoring positions, for major support and tutoring outside school hours, or for home-schooling. Tutors International is able to source the best international tutors including multilingual travelling teachers to accompany families travelling around the world, or those whose lifestyle necessitates frequent travel, in order to maintain consistency in education in extraordinary circumstances.

Tutors International provide tutors in a wide variety of situations from helping students re-take critical exams, helping pupils with the transition of moving between international school systems, and supporting youngsters with AD/HD and dyslexia. They provide a bespoke service to find the right tutor that suits the child’s needs and aspirations, and if a live-in tutor is required, it is essential that the assigned tutor is the right match for the family and fits in the environment.

Tutors International was founded by Adam Caller who has tutored students of all ages. He has received specialist training in dyslexia and Attention Deficit Disorder and is very sensitive to children’s educational difficulties. He has now turned this expertise to recruiting, training and placing other tutors to help families.

Ceremony Marks the Only Time in the Medal’s 28-Year History the U.S. Government’s Highest Arts Honor Ever Bestowed Upon a Military Charity

Fellow 2011 Honorees Include Actor Al Pacino, Singer/Songwriter Mel Tillis and Poet Rita Dove, Among Other Stellar Patrons

Twitter Pitch: Celebrate milestone with @the_USO as @BarackObama and @NEArts award excellence in troop entertainment. Watch live at whitehouse.gov/live

The White House announced today that President Barack Obama will honor the USO with the National Medal of Arts – the U.S. government’s highest arts honor – for sharing the sights and sounds of home with troops stationed around the world. The ceremony will take place in the East Room of the White House on February 13 at 1:45 p.m. ET and will be streamed live at whitehouse.gov/live. Presented to exemplary individuals and/or organizations deserving of special recognition for their encouragement of the arts in America and delivery of inspirations to others through their distinguished achievement, support and patronage, the USO is the only military charity to receive the National Medal of Arts in the medal’s 28-year history.

Fellow 2011 honorees include Al Pacino, Mel Tillis and Rita Dove, among others. Established by Congress in 1984 as a way to recognize outstanding contributions to excellence, growth, support and availability of the arts in the U.S., more than 250 patrons have been presented with this lifetime achievement award with hundreds of nominations being submitted by citizens across the country each year.

“We are humbled by the President’s recognition of our mission to lift the spirits of troops and their families through exceptional entertainment around the world,” said Sloan Gibson, USO President and CEO. “Most importantly – we have never done this alone. From our celebrity friends who have worked with us over the years, our military and corporate partners, and our hard working Entertainment staff – we all share in this honor. We celebrate this award with all of you and with more than 1.4 million service men and women and their families who currently serve our nation.”

Since just before the United States entered World War II, the USO has been the bridge between the American people and our men and women in uniform – extending a much-needed touch of home. In times of peace and war, the USO’s mission has remained the same – to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families wherever they serve. USO entertainment remains essential to fulfilling this mission and does so by sending out well known actors, athletes, musicians, comedians and entertainers each year to visit and spend time with America’s armed forces and their families. Whether performing a USO show in a remote location in the Middle East, visiting a military hospital in Europe, hosting an autograph signing in the Pacific or screening the latest film stateside, the USO has lifted the spirits of millions of service men and women and their families over its 71-year lifetime.

In 2011, the USO deployed 136 celebrity entertainers on 83 tours to 25 countries and 19 states, entertaining more than 296,000 troops and military families. Nineteen of these tours were to a combat zone in the Middle East. That same year, the USO delivered more than 500 special entertainment events to include concerts, autograph signings, hospital visits and movie screenings. Entertainers who recently toured with the USO include Toby Keith, Carlos Mencia, Gary Sinise, Jon Stewart, Babyface, Train, NFL coaches Gary Kubiak, Jim Mora Jr., Jim Mora Sr., Ken Whisenhunt and other NFL greats, NBA legend Karl Malone, Jillian Michaels, Kellie Pickler, NASCAR drivers Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski, Anna Kournikova, and Jordin Sparks. In 2012, the USO will again deploy some of our nation’s most beloved entertainers.

Setting the stage for USO entertainment is the legendary Bob Hope, who traveled the globe in times of war and peace entertaining service men and women for nearly six decades. Nicknamed “America’s No. 1 Soldier in Greasepaint” and “G.I. Bob,” Hope’s early support of the U.S. military led to a formal relationship with the USO during World War II. Over the course of his career, Hope appeared in or hosted hundreds of USO tours, including 35 consecutive Christmas tours. Befriended by virtually every U.S. President since Franklin D. Roosevelt, Hope was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton in 1995 for his lifetime achievements as a comedian, actor and fundraiser for the USO, among other charitable causes.

Recipients of the National Medal of Arts are personally selected by the President of the United States. Each year, the National Endowment for the Arts initiates the selection process by soliciting nominations for the Medal from the public and various arts fields. Nominations are reviewed by the National Council on the Arts, composed of Presidentially-appointed, Senate-confirmed individuals. The National Council’s list of nominees is then forwarded to the President for consideration with candidates of the President’s own choosing. Past honorees include such notable artists as Quincy Jones, Meryl Streep, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Clint Eastwood, Robert Duvall, Dolly Pardon, George Strait, Smokey Robinson, Johnny Cash, Kirk Douglas, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Maya Angelou, Harry Belafonte, Angela Lansbury, Celia Cruz, Minnie Pearl and B.B. King, among others.

About the USO

The USO (United Service Organizations) lifts the spirits of America’s troops and their families millions of times each year at hundreds of places worldwide. We provide a touch of home through centers at airports and military bases in the U.S. and abroad, top quality entertainment and innovative programs and services. We also provide critical support to those who need us most, including forward-deployed troops and their families, wounded warriors, military families and the families of the fallen.

The USO is a private, nonprofit organization, not a government agency. We rely on the generosity of our volunteers and donors. In addition to individual donors and corporate sponsors, the USO is supported by President’s Circle Partners: American Airlines, Kangaroo Express, Kroger, Northrop Grumman Corporation and TriWest Healthcare Alliance and Worldwide Strategic Partners: AT&T, Inc., BAE Systems, The Boeing Company, Clear Channel Communications, The Coca-Cola Company, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft Corporation and Procter & Gamble. We are also supported through the United Way and Combined Federal Campaign (CFC-11381). To join us in this patriotic mission, and to learn more about the USO, please visit uso.org.

About the National Endowment for the Arts

The National Endowment for the Arts was established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government. To date, the NEA has awarded more than $ 4 billion to support artistic excellence, creativity, and innovation for the benefit of individuals and communities. The NEA extends its work through partnerships with state arts agencies, local leaders, other federal agencies, and the philanthropic sector.
Durham, NC (PRWEB) February 07, 2012

A new study by collaborating researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and L’Institut du Thorax in Nantes, France, indicates that stem cells derived from cardiac tissue are far more effective in repairing damage caused by a heart attack than therapies using stem cells taken from bone marrow. The study, published today in STEM CELLS Translational Medicine, suggests that human fetal cardiac-derived c-kit+ stem cells (CSCs) can be 30 times more potent than bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for treating a heart attack.

As both of these cell types are currently in clinical trials, these results are significant because they are the first direct comparison of their therapeutic capability in vivo, the researchers say.

“This research — showing that CSCs can be 30 times more potent than MSCs — is significant because it can impact the design of future clinical trials,” said Dr. Anthony Atala, director of the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine and editor of STEM CELLS Translational Medicine. “The results from the study, one of a few to compare efficacy, have the potential to make the translation process more efficient, speeding the development of new effective therapies.”

The researchers conducted their study using mice models with induced acute myocardial infarction. The mice then received human fetal CSCs or either an equivalent (low dose) or ~30-fold greater number (high dose) of MSCs. Cells were injected immediately after the attack. A control group received PBS. The researchers performed additional experiments to address whether adult CSCs are as efficient as fetal CSCs. The fetal stem cells outperformed the adult-cultured CSCs, as expected; still, the researchers concluded that the latter were more potent than high-dose MSCs in treating a heart attack.

The animals were then evaluated at various intervals over a period of eight weeks. The results showed that the CSCs improved the left ventricle, which had been enlarged by the heart attack, plus lowered the ejection fraction. While the high doses of the MSCs showed similar results, the low-doses of MSCs had no effect.

“This study was motivated by the huge advances occurring in the translation of stem cell therapeutics for heart disease,” said Dr. Joshua Hare, senior author of the study and director of UM’s Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute. “While many candidate therapies are being considered there are few studies comparing relative efficacy. This study shows that tissue specific cardiac stem cells are highly potent, but that bone marrow stem cells are also efficacious. We hope these results will help guide future clinical trials of cell-based therapy for heart disease.”

In addition, said Dr. Behzad Oskouei of UM’s Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute, “All cell therapies studied improved myocardial contractility, but the CSCs preferentially reduced scar size and vascular afterload. Engraftment and trilineage [cardiomyocyte, vascular smooth muscle, endothelial cell] differentiation was also substantially greater with CSCs than with MSCs.”

“It is clear that CSCs are superior in this regard and have potential advantages over MSCs to promote repair following ischemic heart damage. Furthermore, they are effective at a surprisingly low-dose/efficacy ratio,” Dr. Oskouei noted. “These findings offer key new insights into the cellular characteristics underlying successful cell-based cardiac repair.”

Grand Rapids, MI (PRWEB) February 06, 2012

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) indicates that more people than ever are seeking non-surgical options for turning back the clock on aging. Grand Rapids plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven Ringler, has responded to this shift in his patients’ desire for non-surgical alternatives with a new procedure he developed; the Facial UltraLift™. Utilizing a high concentration of ultrasonic energy with technology from Ulthera, along with a combination of facial fillers, Dr. Ringler has developed a non-surgical method for lifting and tightening the face, neck and brow, all with no downtime.

UltraLift™ begins with the ultrasound technology offered by Ulthera™, which was approved by the FDA in 2009. The in-office treatment triggers the body’s own regenerative response, which in turn results in firming, tightening and actual lifting of skin tissue over time. Dr. Ringler was among the first physician innovators adopting the technology in the U.S., and is continuing to refine and expand its application. Unlike a typical Ultherapy treatment, the UltraLift utilizes many more lines of the ultrasonic energy, resulting in more lifting and tightening of skin than was previously possible.

The Facial UltraLift™ combines these advanced Ultherapy techniques, which typically take about 3 months for results to be fully realized, with the more immediate results of artistically placed facial fillers like Radiesse or Juvederm. This office procedure takes 1-3 hours to perform, depending on the needs of the patient. It requires a local anesthetic to keep patients comfortable throughout the treatment process. There is typically no downtime with an UltraLift, and patients may resume their daily activities immediately following treatment.

The UltraLift offers immediate and often significant facial rejuvenation. Dr. Ringler explained, “When people notice the first signs of aging, they don’t always realize that their face has lost some of the volume that they had when they were younger. Facial fillers like Radiesse can help immediately restore some cheek volume that has disappeared or sculpt a jaw line that might show early signs of sagging, while the advanced techniques with Ultherapy gradually lift and tighten the skin from the inside out over time.”

Dr. Ringler has been performing surgical facelift procedures in Grand Rapids for over 25 years and is aware of the shift in consumers’ desire for less invasive procedures. Dr. Ringler explained, “While the results of UltraLift are not going to be as dramatic as with a surgical facelift, the UltraLift provides a great option for patients seeking a non-surgical facelift with subtle, natural results, which improve over several months as the new collagen is generated. My patients like that UltraLift requires no downtime and have been very happy with the results.” UltraLift is currently available exclusively through Dr. Ringler’s office in Grand Rapids, Michigan

If you want to turn back the clock on facial aging, but aren’t ready for a facelift, the new Facial UltraLift may prove to be just what the doctor ordered.
