The tick population is very large and hungry this year, and ticks in the nymphal stage–which are the ticks that most often transmit Lyme disease–are active in May, June and July

Rhinebeck, NY (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

This year’s unusually mild winter and the early onset of warm temperatures has led to the early emergence of ticks searching for a fresh, warm-blooded meal. In addition, a smaller crop of acorns is reported to be a contributing factor as it reduced the population of white-footed mice—ticks’ preferred host—causing them to feed more hungrily on humans and pets.

These trends point to greater chances of contracting Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses particularly in the Northeastern, mid-Atlantic and North Central U.S.

Ticks are not insects, they are related to spiders, scorpions, and mites, all of which are classified as Arachnids. Ticks in the nymphal (immature) stages are active in May, June and July. Research has shown that ticks most often transmit Lyme disease to humans during the nymphal stages, probably because numphs are so small they go unnoticed on a person’s body. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in 2010 about 22,000 cases of Lyme disease and 8,000 more probable cases were reported nationwide.

According to the American Lyme Disease Foundation, the signs of Lyme disease can vary but often include the red rash that may appear around the site of the bite, fever, joint pain, fatigue and chills. As the bacteria continue to invade the body, people may experience a stiff neck, tingling and severe headaches. . Even if these symptoms fade away, untreated Lyme disease may lead to arthritis, nervous system abnormalities, and an irregular heart rhythm.

Babesiosis is another infection transmitted by ticks and is caused by a parasite that lives in red blood cells. The babesia microti parasite infects and destroys red blood cells, and the disease—which is a malaria-like illness—can cause hemolytic anemia. Symptoms begin anywhere from five days after a bite or longer, and may include fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, nausea, tiredness, and a rash. Unlike Lyme, Babesiosis has been known to be fatal. Therefore diagnosis and treatment should begin as soon as possible after it is contracted.

TRICKY DIAGNOSIS

Because tick bites are usually painless, the incubation period is long, and the symptoms so varied, a tick-borne disease may go unrecognized for weeks or even months.

Moreover, these diseases often mimic other conditions—such as the flu, meningitis, or in some instances Multiple Sclerosis—making it easy for there to be a misdiagnosis. Further complicating matters is the fact that diagnostic tests are not always accurate or conclusive.

Test timing is a factor in diagnosis. According to Sally Hojvat, Ph.D., Director of the Division of Microbiology Devices at the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, “It’s important to know that blood tests that check for antibodies to the bacterium that causes Lyme disease are not useful if done soon after a tick bite. It takes two to five weeks for initial antibodies to develop.”

A single tick bite can transmit more than one tick-borne illness—besides Lyme and Babesiosis—such as anaplasmosis, bartonella and tularemia. These co-infections further complicate diagnosis and treatment.

PREVENTION AND DEFENSIVE MEASURES

Lou Paradise, president and chief of research, Topical BioMedics, Inc., the makers of Topricin Pain Relief and Healing Cream, Rhinebeck, NY, says now is the time to avoid contact with ticks and be aware of the symptoms of Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections. “Protection is paramount and awareness is key to early detection and treatment. The best way to prevent tick bites is to avoid wooded and grassy areas where ticks are usually found, and exercise proper precautions when you are outdoors.” says Paradise.

Here are tips to help keep you and your family safe from the tiny but formidable threats and the health hazards they present.

–Wear long-sleeved shirts and long, light-colored pants tucked into socks or boots.

— Keep your lawn manicured and avoid walking in wooded, brushy, and grassy areas. When hiking in an overgrown or wooded area, try to stay near the center of the trail.

–There are a number of plants you can cultivate around your yard that repel ticks, including lavender, garlic, pennyroyal, pyrethrum (a type of chrysanthemum), sage, American beautyberry, and eucalyptus.

–Take a shower or bath within two hours of coming back inside, then perform a whole-body tick check. In the case of Lyme disease, infection from a tick to a human typically takes 30 – 40 hours, so spotting and removing them quickly is an important first defense.

– After being outdoors, remove clothing and wash and dry at a high temperature as ticks may be lurking inside the folds and creases. Washing alone will not kill ticks—even with bleach—it’s the heat of the dryer that does the trick.

– Your four-legged friend may pick up an unwanted hitchhiker and bring it into the house. Be sure to inspect pets for ticks after they’ve been outside for your sake as well as theirs since pets can also contract Lyme disease.

–Make it a daily habit to check yourself, your children, and pets for ticks. Nymphal ticks are the size of a poppy seed in early spring and are particularly hard to find and prefer the back of the knee, armpit, scalp, groin and back of the neck.

–If a tick is found, remove it promptly and properly. Using tweezers carefully grasp the tick by its mouthparts that are close to the skin. NEVER squeeze or rupture the body of the tick while still attached because its belly contents, which may contain disease-producing organisms, could be expressed into your bloodstream. Pull tick steadily away from your skin.

–Clean the wound and disinfect the site of the bite.

–For identification and to test for the presence of the organism that causes Lyme disease, place the tick in a small vial filled with rubbing alcohol and bring it to a Department of Health laboratory or other testing facility.

–Lyme symptoms are not always present. A person may have Lyme disease without presenting the most obvious and “classic” symptoms such as bulls-eye rash, flu, joint pain or swelling.

–Educate yourself. The more you know and understand about Lyme disease and other tick-borne illness, the greater your chances are of avoiding infection and detecting illness if it occurs.

SAFE, NATURAL TREATMENTS

Doctors will often prescribe antibiotics if they suspect Lyme or another tick-borne illness. Here are some other ways you can assist your body further with safe, natural treatments. (Always see a doctor/healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment, and tell them if you are doing any self-care treatment.)

Neuropathic pain is a misfiring of nerve impulses caused by toxins that have damaged nerve tissue and surrounding micro-capillary, depriving the nerve of the oxygen it needs to function properly. This is what causes burning, throbbing, and aching pain in joint and nerve tissue. Without oxygen, cells are destroyed. For healing to take place, the tissue needs to be detoxified and normal blood flow restored. Unfortunately, chemical pain pills add toxins to the body, thereby exacerbating the condition.

“With tick-borne diseases, the body needs to detoxify, especially joint, muscle and nerve tissue,” says Paradise. “ Topricin’s combination of natural biomedicines help the body rebalance healing chemistries needed to detoxify the area by stimulating lymphatic drainage around the nerve tissue and restoring normal oxygenated blood flow to the area—thus supporting the optimal environment for healing/repairing the damage and the first steps of restoring normal nerve function and the beginning of easing of pain.

“Free of chemicals and other irritants, Topricin helps restore vitality to joint, nerve, and muscle tissues while providing safe, effective pain relief. It should be applied as needed three inches on and around the affected joint and massaged in until absorbed three-four times daily until relief is achieved.”

The reference book Prescription for Nutritional Healing offers the following recommendations for helping to recover from Lyme Disease.

Nutritional supplements recommended include:

–Essential fatty acids (for helping to reduce inflammation and joint stiffness)

–Pancreatin and bromelain (to aid protein digestion and reduce inflammation)

–Evening Primrose oil capsules (to help combat pain and inflammation, with significant benefits to the skin and cardiovascular system)

–Garlic (immune system stimulator with antibiotic properties)

–Kelp (a rich source of B-vitamins and minerals, aids in detoxification)

–Vitamins A, C, and E (antioxidants and immune system support)

–“Green drinks” provide chlorophyll (aids in detoxification while providing important nutrients and enzymes).

Herbs recommended include:

–Alfalfa (supplies minerals and detoxifies the body)

–Dandelion root, ginseng, hawthorn, horsetail, and marshmallow root (help cleanse and rebuild the blood and damaged tissues)

–Echinacea (immune enhancer fights bacterial and viral infections; caution: should be used with caution if you are allergic to ragweed)

–Goldenseal (use for one week only as a natural antibiotic; caution: do not use during pregnancy and with caution if you are allergic to ragweed)

–Milk thistle extract (protects the liver and kidneys and stimulates the production of new liver cells)

–Red clover (cleanses the bloodstream, helps fight infection)

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Gordon and Jennifer Raney of Dallas are the owners/operators of 101 Mobility’s latest Texas Franchise serving the Greater Dallas and Fort Worth Metroplex. 101 Mobility Dallas/Fort Worth will join the Austin, Houston, and San Antonio franchises in a recent string of 101 Mobility openings across the Lone Star State.

The Raneys bring with them years of experience in corporate America. Jennifer Raney formerly worked in sales and marketing for brands such as Rubbermaid and Deloitte; Gordon Raney in corporate finance and commercial real estate, with names like PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Invesco, respectively. Both are graduates of Tulane University, and met while pursuing their undergraduate degrees in accounting and finance. Jennifer went on to earn her Master’s in Management (with a focus on nonprofits) from NYU; and Gordon received his MBA from The Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. “We both come from a professional services background and we bring our many years of focus on superior client service to our 101 Mobility clients here in North Texas,” says Gordon Raney.

When asked what attracted them to 101 Mobility, the Raneys stated that it was the youthful and energetic brand, in an industry typically saturated with a more muted approach toward providing mobility solutions for the disabled and mobility-challenged. Other factors are 101 Mobility’s corporate infrastructure, support, and focus on customer service.

The Raneys share a particular interest in helping their neighbors achieve independence through offering a wide array of mobility solutions. “Our goal is to improve our clients quality of life everyday! Both Gordon and I have faced mobility challenges in our own families,” says Jennifer Raney. “We truly enjoy working with each of our clients and their families to help them overcome their own mobility challenges in order to maintain their independence in their homes and throughout their daily activities. It’s one of the most rewarding things we do.”

101 Mobility Dallas/Fort Worth will focus on helping clients age-in-place by selling, installing, and servicing ramps, stair lifts, automobile lifts, patient lifts, vertical lifts, barrier-free baths and offering complete home modifications to incorporate total accessibility solutions. 101 Mobility is one of the nation’s largest sellers and installers of personal mobility products from well-known brands such as Bruno, Harmar, Liko, and many more.

101 Mobility is also a leader in providing services to our United States Veterans through the U.S. Veteran’s Administration. The Raneys are especially excited to have the opportunity to give back to our Military Veterans. “My mother has served our veterans for nearly 30 years as a nurse at the V.A. hospital,” says Gordon Raney. “Jen and I are honored to have our own opportunity to serve our veterans by providing them with the mobility products and solutions that will best meet their needs and allow them to achieve their lifestyle goals.”

101 Mobility is the franchising world’s first full-service sales, service, and installation provider of a complete line of mobility and accessibility products and equipment, including stair lifts, auto lifts, ramps, porch lifts, patient lifts, power wheelchairs, scooters and more. Short and long-term rentals are also available for home, office, and institution. By working with patients to identify which home health care devices best suit each individual’s needs, 101 Mobility provides an alternative to group homes and rehabilitation centers by allowing patients to live self-sufficiently in their homes.

Manhattan Beach, CA (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

The Mesothelioma Resource Center at mesoauthority.com is alerting workers who have been exposed to asbestos that they should monitor their health for the emergence of serious conditions such as mesothelioma, cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that attacks the lining of the body’s organs. It is caused almost exclusively by exposure to asbestos. Since mesothelioma has no cure and can take 20 to 50 years to surface, early detection is crucial.

Previously, the American Cancer Society linked asbestos exposure to lung cancer as well as mesothelioma. However, new research is showing the substance may cause other conditions.

A British study published recently in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, reviewed records of workers who were exposed to asbestos between 1971 and 2005. Researchers found that those exposed to asbestos had a higher death rate from ischemic heart disease. They were also 63% more likely to die of a stroke.

Unfortunately, asbestos was used in countless products, building materials, industrial settings and automotive parts from the 1930s until the 1980s. It is still used today in many products like car brakes, shingles, chalkboards and others according to the Environmental Protection Agency, http://www.epa.gov/asbestos/pubs/pubs.html.

As a result, experts believe millions of workers and their families may have been exposed to the material. The Centers for Disease Control estimate approximately 3,000 people each year are diagnosed with mesothelioma.

The companies that mined, manufactured and sold asbestos, or used it in their products, are liable for the damages caused to those who have developed serious illness like mesothelioma.

For now, the resource center urges anyone exposed to asbestos to monitor for symptoms of mesothelioma such as shortness of breath, a lingering cough or chest pain, or night sweats. Those diagnosed should contact a mesothelioma lawyer to learn about their legal options to file a mesothelioma lawsuit as soon as possible.

For more information on the dangers of asbestos, the symptoms and treatment of mesothelioma and legal options of mesothelioma patients, visit http://www.MesoAuthority.com today.

Many people work in a field that focuses on helping to better the lives of others. However, not many of them can say they have met reincarnated celebrities through their work.

The late Judy Garland is just one of the personas Liz Vincent has encountered while assisting her clients as a hypnotherapist and past life regression specialist.

“Sometimes people tune into the lives of famous people. Often, when you ask them to really step back and look, sense and feel the body they are in, their perspective changes, and they are more likely to personally know or at least know of the celebrity,” says Vincent.

Vincent reveals her successful treatment methods for depression, anxiety, and phobias through the process of forgiveness in her latest book, “Finding the Light” (published by Balboa Press).

“By harboring annoyance and resentment towards others, we are actually, on a very profound level, angry with ourselves. By learning to practice total forgiveness of self and of others, we free ourselves from our own negative and repetitive patterns,” Vincent adds.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 12, 2012

The Psychiatric Hospitals industry treats about 15.0% of the US population in any given year, according to a report by the Surgeon General, and the incidence and awareness of mental illness and substance abuse disorders has been on the rise. Partly due to the mounting awareness of mental health, the industry is expected to grow 1.9% per year on average to total $ 20.4 billion during the five years to 2012. The economic recession only had a minor impact on the industry in 2009, causing revenue growth to slow that year. Revenue is expected to expand a moderate 1.1% in 2012, which reflects a weak economic recovery. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Sophia Snyder, reduced capacity, mental health parity legislation and increased demand for behavioral health services have improved industry fundamentals during the past five years. The government has been making efforts to reduce healthcare costs by emphasizing care in community and residential settings. Additionally, managed-care organizations are becoming larger through consolidation, which has increased the price negotiating power of these companies. The net result has been a reduction in psychiatric beds. Although consolidation has been increasing in recent years, the Psychiatric Hospitals industry remains fragmented. The top firm is Universal Health Services Inc. Concentration can be particularly high within some geographic regions, since location is a key success factor; once a large psychiatric hospital has established itself in a market, it is more difficult for a small company to compete.

There has been substantial merger and acquisition activity among for-profit firms and an increase in the management of state-owned facilities by private operators, continues Snyder. Most notably, Universal Health Services acquired Psychiatric Solutions in 2010. Consolidation in the Psychiatric Hospitals industry has been occurring for quite some time. Prior to the announced deal between Universal Health and Psychiatric Solutions, both companies generated a significant portion of their growth through acquiring smaller operators. Part of the contraction in psychiatric hospitals came from consolidation in the overall healthcare sector. As managed care organizations merged in the 1990s, hospitals, general and psychiatric care alike, consolidated. This improved hospitals’ ability to negotiate with MCOs on payments and pricing.

The number of industry hospitals is expected to decrease to 516 in the five years to 2012. This trend is expected to continue during the next five years as companies consolidate, particularly following the merging of the two largest players in the industry. Although the number of companies is expected to decline, bed counts will begin to stabilize to meet demand as the remaining operators grow in capacity. An improved balance between supply and demand will weaken the industry’s ability to negotiate with managed-care organizations and governmental bodies, which will restrain profitability in the five years to 2017. During this period, operating profit is forecast to decline slightly. The favorable Medicaid reimbursement environment of recent years is forecast to come under pressure during the next five years as states look for ways to cut healthcare spending. This, together with mounting wage and supply costs, will put downward pressure on profitability in the industry. In contrast, the economy is forecast to improve, which will boost the number of people with health insurance coverage and raise disposable income. Consequently, revenue is forecast to increase.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

The University of San Francisco School of Business and Management’s Gellert Family Business Center is proud to announce Casa Sanchez and Diamonds in the Rough Daycare as the recipients of its 2012 Gellert Family Business Award. The annual award recognizes extraordinary family business achievement and community service, and is made possible by a generous gift from The Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation. Casa Sanchez and Diamonds in the Rough will be formally honored on during a dinner program on Wed., May 23 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the University of San Francisco’s Lone Mountain campus.

Both Diamonds in the Rough and Casa Sanchez exemplify a commitment to community and business success in the Bay Area and beyond. Diamonds in the Rough is a children’s daycare that has been in business for 12 years. Owned and operated by Brenda Smith, Diamonds in the Rough specializes in children from infancy to three years of age, and specializes in children with asthma, diabetes, seizures, and other special needs. Diamonds in the Rough is a play-based, hands-on learning environment that builds a strong foundation for children.

“It is such a wonderful feeling to be recognized for doing something you love,” said Brenda Smith, founder and director of Diamonds in the Rough Daycare. “We feel privileged to serve families in our community by providing a safe, nurturing environment for children to flourish and grow. Because education is a vital part of what we do, we are so honored to receive this award from USF.”

Established in 1924, Casa Sanchez is a Mexican restaurant by day and a lounge by night featuring live music, drinks, and authentic Mexican cuisine. Originally focused on stone-ground tortillas, Casa Sanchez ran the very first mechanized tortilla factory in Northern California. As time passed, Casa Sanchez established itself as a Mission District institution, becoming well known for its chips and salsas, which are now widely sold at supermarkets. The business is currently owned and managed by fourth generation family members, and succession of the fifth generation has been established.

“The Sanchez family is humbled to be recognized by the University of San Francisco, especially with this family business award,” said Martha Sanchez, great great granddaughter of the original founders who now helps run Casa Sanchez. “Having a strong work ethic is first and foremost when operating a family business, and we are delighted to be recognized for that hard work.”

In addition to receiving the award, Diamonds in the Rough and Casa Sanchez will benefit from additional education, marketing, succession planning, and technical analytics assistance that USF offers to its Gellert awardees. The Gellert Family Business Center at USF provides family-owned businesses with useful information on business trends, research, and best practices. The center pairs awardees with USF faculty who are doing research on such issues as social media and business analytics, as well as provides USF students with an opportunity to work with family-owned and operated businesses.

“Diamonds in the Rough and Casa Sanchez show us how successful family businesses serve as the cornerstones of communities,” said Monika Hudson, assistant professor in USF’s School of Management and director of the Gellert Family Business Center. “They are intelligent entrepreneurs who approach business with excellence and a deep commitment to our community.”

Fort Myers, FL (PRWEB) May 04, 2012

During the monthly meeting of the Horizon Council, executives temporarily turned off their iPads, closed their portfolios, and made a commitment to roll up their sleeves for a series of health assessments and benchmark wellness tests to launch the Healthy Horizon Challenge.

The Healthy Horizon Challenge is a comprehensive, 12-week program, derived from the findings of the inaugural CEO Roundtables, as a strategic initiative for 2012. The program, created by the Horizon Council Healthcare Task Force in partnership with Lee Memorial Health System, is designed to increase awareness among the business community and create a healthier and happier workforce in Lee County.

Horizon Council members serve as challenge champions and ambassadors to their member organizations and companies through active participation beginning with the pre-testing phase of the Horizon Health Challenge. Personalized, confidential assessments and wellness profiles include:

Health Risk Assessment (HRA)
Fitness assessment including biometrics (blood pressure, weight, BMI, body fat percent)
Body Age Assessment
Health History Assessment
Lab Tests Screening
Wellness Consultation

Following the initial phase, the program will officially begin at the general membership meeting of the Horizon Council on May 18 and lasts through August 10, 2012 to effectively reach more than 15,000 people associated with the businesses, individuals, and member organizations represented by the Horizon Council.

“As leaders of our companies and influencers within our community, we must ‘walk the walk’ for increased wellness among our workforce,” said Robbie Roepstorff, Horizon Council Healthcare Task Force chair. “Volumes of research indicate a solid correlation between a healthy workforce and increased productivity and morale as well as decreased absenteeism and overall health care expenses.”

“Lifestyle change significantly decreases the incidence of all the major chronic illnesses and even cancers. Healthy nutrition and regular physical activity have been shown to be the foundation for healthy living,” said Dr. Sal Lacagnina of Lee Memorial Health System and Healthy Horizon Challenge medical director.

Funding for the program is jointly sponsored by the Horizon Council and Lee Memorial Health System.

“Healthcare is a key pillar in our community and naturally unites business function with quality of life,” said Jennifer Berg, marketing and communications director of the Fort Myers Regional Partnership, Lee County’s Economic Development Office. “Our partnership with Lee Memorial exemplifies our mission to work together in all facets of business to strengthen our community at its core – our people.”

Melville, NY (PRWEB) May 03, 2012

Attorneys Andres Alonso and David Krangle, founding partners of Alonso Krangle LLP, a national law firm focused on fighting for the rights of serious personal injury victims, are today calling for the universal screening of newborn infants for Heart Birth Defects, Cardiac Birth Defects via a simple test called pulse oximetry. New research published this week in The Lancet indicates that use of pulse oximetry soon after birth could detect more than three quarters of all Heart Birth Defects, Cardiac Birth Defects in seemingly healthy babies, with few false positive results. [thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736%2812%2960107-X/fulltext]

Certain Heart Birth Defects and Cardiac Birth Defects may be caused by certain drugs. Alonso Krangle LLP represents victims of Heart Birth Defects and Cardiac Birth Defects caused by exposure to certain medications, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants such as:

Zoloft
Lexapro
Paxil
Prozac
Effexor
Celexa

The firm is currently offering FREE lawsuit evaluations to any family who believes their child’s heart defect is related to their mother’s use of a SSRI antidepressant or another drug during pregnancy. To discuss a potential antidepressant birth defect lawsuit claim with one of the experienced and compassionate birth defect lawyers at Alonso Krangle LLP, please contact us at 1-800-403-6191 or visit our website, http://www.FightForVictims.com

Heart Birth Defects, Cardiac Birth Defects And Pulse Oximetry Test

Heart Birth Defects, Cardiac Birth Defects are the leading cause of infant death. However, detecting these disorders early can greatly approve outcomes among afflicted babies. Pulse oximetry is an inexpensive, non-invasive test that involves measuring the extent to which red and infrared light is absorbed by a sensor attached to a patient’s body, usually on the finger or earlobe. The measurement indicates how well oxygenated the blood is. In a newborn, low oxygenation can indicate that a baby has a heart defect. [rcjournal.com/cpgs/pulsecpg.html]

According to The Lancet study, a meta-analysis of 13 studies involving 230,000 newborns, pulse oximetry showed an accuracy rate of 99.9 percent, and detected 76.5 percent of all congenital heart-defect cases and had a low false-positive rate of .14 percent. According to the study’s authors, the findings “provide compelling evidence for introduction of pulse oximetry as a screening method in clinical practice.”

According to Alonso Krangle LLP, early detection of Heart Birth Defects, Cardiac Birth Defects can greatly reduce infant mortality, as well the costs associated with emergency room visits and expensive surgical repairs. But so far, only four U.S. states – New Jersey, Indiana, Maryland and Virginia – have enacted laws requiring routine pulse oximetry screening for newborn infants. In light of The Lancet findings, Alonso Krangle LLP calls on all states to enact similar requirements as soon as practically possible. [abcnews.go.com/Health/universal-heart-screening-recommended-newborns/story?id=16252136#.T6FycFL4JqM]

Heart Birth Defects, Cardiac Birth Defects And SSRI Antidepressants

Since the first SSRI (Prozac) was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the agency has issued several warnings about the drugs and birth defects. In 2005, the agency warned that studies have shown that infants born to women who had first trimester Paxil exposure had an increased risk of Heart Birth Defects, Cardiac Birth Defects, primarily ventricular and atrial septal defects (VSDs and ASDs). [fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/2005/ucm108527.htm] In 2006, the FDA asked the manufacturers of several SSRI antidepressants to add information to their labels describing the potential risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) after a study in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) found a six-fold increased risk of the disorder among infants born to mothers who took an antidepressant in the last trimester of pregnancy. [fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm150749.htm]

In 2007, another NEJM study found that babies born to women who used an SSRI antidepressant during the first trimester of pregnancy were twice as likely to suffer heart-related birth defects. The most common heart defects seen in that study were ventricular outflow defects and septal defects. [http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa067407

Alonso Krangle LLP is currently investigating the association between the occurrence of Heart Birth Defects, Cardiac Birth Defects and SSRI antidepressants, including:

Ventral septal defect (VSD)
Atrial septal defects (ASD)
Tetralogy of Fallot
Hypoplastic left heart syndrome
Hypoplastic right heart syndrome
Coarctation of the aorta
Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of Newborn (PPHN)
